Teaching Update

This is an update continuation of the Telling Your Own Story class that I co-taught with fellow artist Jonas Angelet in collaboration with Pyramid Atlantic and Asian American LEAD. Our objective for this class was to help students develop the ability to express themselves through art that is founded in their personal experiences.
Here they are working on developing drawings for their silk screening projects. The kids then transferred their images to silk screens for printing.

paste up! We decided (and got permission) to paste all of the images the kids made to the exterior of the building. Here is Jonas doing a demo of the paste up. We used a very temporary flour and water paste.

Kids pasting - they had to work on laying out the design and transferring the layout to the wall.

Stitching Time

This is the full shot of the first 'Stitching Time' piece. I am currently making one unit a day to assemble a calendar of the bisquits (the name for the shape of each individual piece as they look like rising bisquits).

Teaching Update

Co-teacher Jonas Angelet and I hosted the middle school age kids from AA LEAD at our studio facilities at Pyramid Atlantic today. We gave them a tour of the studios, the work up in the gallery, and we were able to view a surprise bonus - an artist had pasted a large screened image to the side of a nearby building. We have plans to do the same with our final images from the kids!

Today we worked on getting their images developed and helping them use drawing fluid to transfer these to their screen printing screens. Next week we will print the screens onto paper and t-shirts. The final week we will work on design and layout of all of our pieces together and paste them up on the outside wall of the Pyramid Atlantic building. Our kids did a great job today and thanks to all of the help from staff!

30 minute make

A group of us at Pyramid Atlantic have been trying to get together to spend 30 minutes making something completely new. This idea originated from feeling like we often overthink ideas instead of just jumping in and 'making'. It seems we are constantly putting parameters and limitations on what can be done/used within the 30 minutes.

Teaching

Finished prepping content for class 'Telling Your Own Story' that starts today. I am teaching for Silver Spring non-profit arts hub Pyramid Atlantic and we have been paired with Asian American LEAD for this program. AALEAD was started in D.C. and now has an office in Wheaton, MD. Their goal is to work to promote well-being, leadership opportunities, and community building among low-income Asian descent families. Myself and fellow artist/teacher Jonas Angelet are teaching middle school members of AALEAD how to develop personal narrative/content in artwork - should be exciting! The class goes for 4 weeks. Will try to get pix and post later!
