I'm Not

These are silkscreened 2 inch squares - some with screened transluscent overlays.

What They Said

August calendar from the 'What They Said' series. This ongoing project is a collection of phrases gathered from things people have said to me during conversations. Phrases are written down and later formed into 2 x 2 inch squares to be hand knotted next to the others from previous days, eventually forming a documentary calendar of spoken words.

Recent Activity

Still making these spoken word based pieces. These are a continuation of the 2 inch square format on fabric/paper/nylon. I have played with 3 and 4 inches but really like the proportions of the 2 inches. Trying to figure out how to take them to another level of cohesion and depth. Maybe take them more 3 dimensional in some way. Toying with interactive or performance elements.
These are the 5 inch squares that then get folded and stitched into the 3-D bisquits. They may get more embellishment with hand stitching or printing... though there is an appeal in the spare.

Teaching Update

This is an update continuation of the Telling Your Own Story class that I co-taught with fellow artist Jonas Angelet in collaboration with Pyramid Atlantic and Asian American LEAD. Our objective for this class was to help students develop the ability to express themselves through art that is founded in their personal experiences.
Here they are working on developing drawings for their silk screening projects. The kids then transferred their images to silk screens for printing.
Anthony doing some video documentation of our....

paste up! We decided (and got permission) to paste all of the images the kids made to the exterior of the building. Here is Jonas doing a demo of the paste up. We used a very temporary flour and water paste.

Kids pasting - they had to work on laying out the design and transferring the layout to the wall.

Stitching Time

This is the full shot of the first 'Stitching Time' piece. I am currently making one unit a day to assemble a calendar of the bisquits (the name for the shape of each individual piece as they look like rising bisquits).

Teaching Update

Co-teacher Jonas Angelet and I hosted the middle school age kids from AA LEAD at our studio facilities at Pyramid Atlantic today. We gave them a tour of the studios, the work up in the gallery, and we were able to view a surprise bonus - an artist had pasted a large screened image to the side of a nearby building. We have plans to do the same with our final images from the kids!

Today we worked on getting their images developed and helping them use drawing fluid to transfer these to their screen printing screens. Next week we will print the screens onto paper and t-shirts. The final week we will work on design and layout of all of our pieces together and paste them up on the outside wall of the Pyramid Atlantic building. Our kids did a great job today and thanks to all of the help from staff!
